there can be number of ways you can explain this

we can say 12×12 => 3×3
next digit in the number i.e. 3 is the next digit after 1 & 2

OR other logic
(second digits + (diff of the digits))*(second digits + (diff of the digits)) => (2 + (2-1))*(2 + (2-1)) => 3*3 => 9
so for 34×34 => (4 + 1)*(4+1) => 25
