Cars Math Puzzle – How many cars in the parking ?

May 20, 2017 by puzzler 2 Comments

One-tenth of the cars in a car park are yellow. Another car arrives and now one-ninth of the cars are yellow.

How many cars are now in the car park?

Check your answer:-

Tried enough already?
Answer With ExplanationHide
lets say there are total x cars, thus
x/10 number of cars are yellow initially.

as yellow car’s percent increases from 1/10th to 1/9th after new car arrives, so new car must be a yellow car.
So we can form this equation

1 + x/10 = (x+1)/9

Now we just need to solve this equation
on multiplying both sides by 9*10 =>
9*10 + 9x = 10x + 10
90 – 10 = 10x – 9x
x = 80

So there were 8 yellow cars initially among a total of 80 cars(i.e. 1/10th)
and a new yellow cars comes making 9 yellow cars in total of 81 cars.(i.e. 1/9th)

So answer to the question is 81. there are a total of 81 cars now.

Answer With Explanation
Answer:

3.5 + 4.5 = 8
+ +
9.5 – 3.5 = 6
|| ||
13 8

Explanation:
We can make four equations
A+B = 8
C-D = 6
A+C = 13
B+D = 8

now we have four variables with four equations so it should be easy to solve. let’s solve these four equations

if we add the four equations
A+B+C-D+A+C+B+D = 8 + 6 + 13 + 8
2(A+B) + 2C = 35
2C = 35 – 2*8 —- by replacing A+B
2C = 35 – 16 = 19
C = 9.5

from 2nd Equation C – D = 6
D = C – 6
D = 9.5 – 6
D = 3.5

from 3rd equation
A+C = 13
A = 13 – C
A = 13 – 9.5
A = 3.5

from 4th equation
B + D = 8
B = 8 – D
B = 8 – 3.5
B = 4.5
