if you write the numbers in english words and than subtract the total number of alphabets in both the word, you will get the answer
for example
three – two = 2
sixteen – ten = 4
one hundred seventeen – ninety nine = 19 – 10 = 9
so
one thousand – two hundred sixty five = 11 – 19 = -8
