its
(first number * second number) + first number
so
8 + 11 = 8*11 + 8 = 88 + 8 = 96

i got both the answers 40 and 96 easily ….and somewhere it said only 1 in 1000 are able to solve it and get both answers….i would just like to put it out there that people are really stupid…i agree to the below comment that there is a pattern and by that pattern you would get 96 but it is a logical deduction problem where you are given premises and you have to take them at face value and assume that only the premise given to you is correct at that particular moment and everything else sane in this world doesnt makes sense if you are to solve that problem..so i would just consider these 4 equations and not form another premise on my own…premises here are facts and facts are the truth…Although with Trump at helm now i think the statement that facts are the truth needs some serious thinking..

People keep saying if you follow a pattern it is 40.
But if you do follow the main pattern it is 96. I have not seen this pattern shown before to go along with the others:
Notice all parts follow a pattern:
1+4=5 (+7)
2+5=12 (+9)
3+6=21 (+11)
4+7=32 (+13)
5+8=45 (+15)
6+9=60 (+17)
7+10=77(+19)
8+11=96
